Beach Camping

Camping on the Beach at Assateague and Chincoteague Islands

Picture Link

Camping with the Palmers near Assateague and Chincoteague islands. It was Memorial Day weekend and most camping spots were already booked. We were fortunate to reserve a spot right off of the beach at a RV campground. With the water about 100 yards away and a nice private beach, I was ready to embrace the world of RV camping! Some of the RV's were NICE - leather furniture inside, satellite dishes, large TV's, and of course the best lawn chairs and ornaments money can buy. It was a competition to see who can attach the most Walmart items to the outside of their RV.

We spent most of our time exploring the A+C islands (too long to write full names). A and C islands are famous for wild horses which we only saw from a distance. C also has a nature preserve with lots of wild birds and places to birdwatch. We rented a tandem beach cruiser and biked around a large lake and the beach. The best part of the beaches here is they're part of the National Park Service so there is ZERO commercialism. No boardwalk, little garbage, no big buildings or lights. We also explored the small fishing village on mopeds.

Philly

Enjoyed a wonderful weekend with Brian and Yasmin Beers in Philly. Never been. A day was about the right amount of time to see all the good sites from "National Treasure." Janae and I rented the DVD the night before going just to enjoy the trip more :). Of course we tried some famous cheese-steak sandwiches there (I'm pretty sure we didn't go to the right place as the one we went to, run by the Omish, was a little on the bland side).

Philadelphia...check. Don't need to go back.

50 McDonalds McNuggets in 26 minutes.

On a slow Thursday afternoon about two weeks ago, people at work started talking about stupid ‘food bets’ that have been attempted before like 4 sticks of butter in 15 minutes, a can of dog food, one of everything in the vending machine, or 50 chicken nuggets in an hour. “50 chicken nuggets from McDonalds in an hour sounds doable,” I stated. The last guy that attempted this puked at 47. Before I could back out, bets were taking place and money was coming down on me eating 50 chicken nuggets in an hour.

From the offset, I said I wouldn’t work for cheap and set the target at $300. Once the pot for me hit $300, I’d pull the trigger and attempt the feat. If I do it, money is mine and if I fail, everyone gets their piece of the pot back. Their donation was seen as ‘entertainment’ money which they may see back. Of course, there were also side bets made on me. Scott Haymore was the only one who went long me and took the other side of everyone who betted against me. As the pot was building to $300, which took a couple hours to do, someone mentioned knocking the time to 45 minutes would generate more money. Buck quickly jumped in and said $400 to finish in 45 minutes and I agreed too quickly. That sounded too difficult! Buck was generous enough to say that the original $300 for an hour stood and there was a $100 bonus to finish in 45. Fair.

The feat sounded doable. I thought I would either finish in 20 minutes or puke at 40 and told everyone that’s how I saw it. Everyone crowded as the chicken nuggets came and I was off to a good pace. The first 10 went down in just a few minutes. A picture of a chicken-head McNugget was quickly put in front of me. I just turned the other way and kept at it. I was surprised I never slowed down. All 50 went down in 26-27 minutes! Did I eat them naked? I couldn’t do it as the taste was just too nasty. Sauce was my saving grace. The damage? 2500 calories and 180 grams of fat. I felt lethargic and sick for a good day and a half. The task was too easy and the new bar has been set at 75 in 45 minutes.
