Janae and I spent New Years on Kaohsiung going to the new "Dream Mall." Yes, that is the actual name. Yes, the mall is quite dreamy. The place was packed with people for the free New Years concert and it took us a long time riding home on Janae's little scooter (called motorcycles in Taiwan even though it's only 50cc). It was nice to be stationed at her parent's place, meet up with friends, and eat lots of good food with her extended family!

Food with Janae's family

We had the good fortune to be treated to some of the best seafood I've had in my life! One of Janae's cousin, Mei-mei, who visited us while we lived in DC, married into a family of renowned seafood chefs. Her husband's father ran a very successful seafood restaurant and parted his knowledge to his three sons. Mei-mei married the most talented of the three who now owns his own restaurant. Unfortunately I didn't catch a photo of Mei-mei or the chef as both were busy attending to the restaurant.

Their daughter, Ting-ting, about half a year older than Verene, is extremely cute. She speaks in complete sentences and welcomes customers into the restaurant as they walk in. She was kind enough to feed Verene through dinner and push her around in her little car. Whenever the camera was pulled out, she'd have her 2 fingers out with her photogenic smile ready.

The other family pictured is Ji-hua and his wife, who own a very successful bakery in Taiwan. We joined them for their company's year end banquet. They're the first bakery to go online and are becoming a household name! Even my relatives in the North know about their bakery, famous for a particular pasterie with melted butter at the core. A bite into the heart of the bread and the perfect amount of butter fills the palette - not too hot and oily and not too hard. You have to wait 3 months to get your hands on one of these butter perfections - that's how far they're back-ordered. Fortunately we got the relative special and had a couple dozen hand delivered.

Catching up with old friends

Janae caught up with old friends from her school days and even took a girls weekend in Taidong. I was able to meet up with Amy and Becca, friends from my mission in Sydney. Amy was kind enough to treat us to a new style of Japanese grill that was delicious! Janae was so impressed we took her parents back to try. Becca was so generous with her time and took the day off to visit. With the economy doing poorly in Taiwan, and her company downsizing from 90 to 5 people in the last year, I was touched by the gesture. Being one of five left from the massive downsizing speaks a lot to her abilities at work! Her husband was very pleasant and a great chef. We look forward to eating more of his cooking the next time we visit. Becca's son (Brandon, I think was his name) only a month older than Verene, was very kind in sharing is toys with her. Becca was kind enough to send us to the airport where Verene enjoyed playing in the little playground and helping with our bags.

It's so nice seeing friends from the past that remind us of fond memories and we have the opportunities to meet often and create new ones!

Taidong is one of Mom's favorite places on earth. It's a beautiful place uniquely situated between the pacific ocean and the Central mountain range where both are easily accessible. It's home to 7 of the 14-15 aboriginal races in Taiwan, one of which gave birth to Taiwanese baseball in the village of Hongye.

Mom traveled to Taidong in her early 20's to teach at a middle school and fell in love with the small fishing town. Her aunt lived there with their five boys and her uncle, always wanting a girl, welcomed her with open arms. Her uncle was a fisherman and his sons too. One of them runs the family fishing supply store there and hosted us during our stay. He summed up Taidong best when speaking of the schools there. They're not top ranked schools and may not teach all the test taking tricks and tactics at other schools, but they teach kids how to be happy. They do a fantastic job of that! Mom's aunt and all her sons are of the happiest people I know. They're easing going people who are always smiling and joking around.

A lesson in natural history

My uncle was a fantastic tour guide of the area. He's been training to be a certified tour guide and volunteering at the newly built museum of natural history.

Taidong is a geological wonder. The Central mountain range was formed by plate movement between the Eurasia and Philippines. The browns of part of the mountain range are remnants made of a different type of dirt and unlike most mountains in Taiwan, are not able to grow any vegetation.

Verene had a blast in the museum running around the big open display rooms. I was a bit surprised how child-proof the museum was as it wasn't too cluttered and the displays were not easily accessible for little Verene.

There was a hallway that joined two exhibits in the museum with a glass floor. The floor highlighted mini displays a couple feet deep that visitors could see as they walked through. The idea was clever and certainly drew the attention of Verene. She was running at 100mph towards whatever caught her attention until she saw the floor change. The glass see-through floor was something new and she didn't know if she could trust her weight to it even though she saw us walk on it. She stood at the edge of the cement floor looking to the glass floor with a perplexed look before extending one foot out to lightly tap the glass. Yes, it was solid. After repeating the exercise a few times, she took mini baby steps onto the glass as if walking on ice. After her first step, she stood still for a moment questioning if the next step would be safe. After a moment of processing, she started to move again - right foot out for a step, drag the left foot until it was square with the right and repeat. She eventually worked her way up to full steps and made it safely across the glass.

Aboriginals and baseball

The other highlight of our trip to Taidong was visiting aboriginal villages - especially the birthplace of Taiwanese little league baseball. In 1968 the Hongye Elementary School team surprised the nation to win the national championships. They were a nobody team from a small aboriginal mountain village that went on to play the older, better funded, and more experienced Japanese team to beat them in a series 7:0 and 5:2. With meager means, the team started their baseball passion by carving their own bats and using stones as balls! Check out the black and white picture below. I love the expression on the catcher's face - he must have been the last kid picked on the team to play catcher with his bare hands with stones used as rocks. We happened to catch the current team practicing on the same field when we visited.

More nature in Taidong

The rest of our time in Taidong was spent hiking around a couple beach and a small island off of one of them connected by a bridge. In the days before the bridge, my uncle and other fishermen would make the trek to the island during low tide, fish, and come back before the tides washed away their way home. If they forgot the time while fishing and missed the low tide land bridge back home, they would have to wait another 6-8 hours for the tide to recede. I imagine "Mom, I'm 8 hours late because I missed the low tide" was a common excuse for kids to stay out late!

On occasion we would see farmer's fields planted with flowers sometimes as they would plant them to bring different nutrients back to the ground in off seasons. In Hualian, the government even paid them with cheap fertilizer or other incentives to make the city more attractive for tourists.

Taidong is famous for it's hot springs but unfortunately we didn't have the time scheduled for spending a good afternoon in one. Mary happened to think the 15 minutes we had before heading back to our train station was sufficient to change into her bathing suit, run down to the hot springs off the side of the river, dry off, change, and make it back in time. She was the only one quick enough to make the quick jot and enjoyed soaking in natural hot springs for a couple minutes while the rest of us looked at her. I think she definitely got more out of it than we did!

The beauty of Hualian lies in Taroko Gorge. Granite canyons laced with greenery only Taiwan can produce. Our vacation style turned very relaxing and we ended up taking our time - much more than the guide planned on us taking at each spot. I guess this is why we had a private guide and not a tour group so we could talk, enjoy time together as a family, and catch up!

One of the sites in Hualian worth a specific mention was Water Curtain Cave, part of Baiyang trail that we hiked.

The trail passed through a few tunnel caves where Water Curtain was one of the last before the trail ended. It was dark and looked somewhat blocked off. Water flowed out of this one like a small river which was unique to the others; however, there was a small path on the right side and we would occasionally see people wander in and out of the cave. I held Verene tight and we stumbled our way through the dark; we didn't have the foresight of other hikers to bring flashlights. About 2/3 through the cave, we turned a corner to see light from the other end illuminate a waterfall that flowed from above creating the small river we were hiking next to. It was amazing to see! A waterfall inside a cave! Verene wasn't as excited as I was and kept holding on to me tighter and tighter.

On our return back to the entrance of the cave, we experienced one of the best parts of Taiwan - the people. Verene and I were wet from the adventure and while standing there waiting for Mom, Mary and Debbie, a nice young lady took out some paper towels to dry Verene's hair. Quickly her father joined in with a clean hand towel from his bag. I loved the people's hospitality!

Our first vacation out of Singapore was to Taiwan for Christmas and New Years. Janae left at the beginning of December to be with her parents and I joined her two weeks later for Christmas and New Years. Mom, Mary and Debbie were going to Taiwan as well - I was excited to be able to see everyone again!

This would also be the first time Verene sees her great grandmother, great uncles and aunts as well.

Grandma lives in the same house that my mom grew up in. After seeing Verene run around, she said it reminded her of when I was little running around the same floor. I wonder if Grandma had similar thoughts. It becamse a special cross generational moment. Grandma is in ok shape for being well in her 80's and even took us to the market in the morning. One of the highlights coming back to Taiwan is eating Aunt Haowei's yummy food - she should open a restaurant! Every meal was extravagant. In addition to visiting family, Mom put together a fantastic itinerary for us to visit Hualian and Taidong while we were there.

Verene run

First order of business after arriving in Taiwan was to make a Verene run. Janae wasn't going to join us for the first few days of our travels since she had a girls weekend with friends in Taizhong planned. Her family lives in Kaohsiung in the South and I was in the North at Grandma's house. After learning about the new high speed rail which only takes 1.5 hours to travel to Janae's home, I decided to run down, stay the night, get Verene, and come back the next day in time for our train to Hualian.

Good thing I had the help of Mom and my sisters in taking care of Verene. This was the first time I had her by myself for longer than a day! I wasn't too nervous about it since I missed her so much. Not only did I miss her because she had been in Taiwan for two weeks but also because I don't see her much even in Singapore due to my hours at work. This was my vacation and I wanted to make sure I had as much time as possible with cute Verene.

The streets are closed off to traffic with police patrolling the street entrances, a temporary taxi stand emerges outside the American school with long queues of kids and parents being dropped off and leaving. The streets are packed of Westerners and some locals as well. Official halloween banners span the street as well as corporate booths promoting their ex-pat related businesses. Disney set a booth there selling tickets to their latest Singapore show!

About half of our church group live nearby the school as its convenient for their school age kids. We were invited by one of these families to join them for our first Singaporean Halloween. We joined them with another family from Belgium and Holland. It was their first Halloween ever. There were kids everywhere and Verene, dressed as a ladybug, loved being around and "playing" with them. She's just starting to be aware of other kids now and learning how to interact with them.

We were taking pictures of all the kiddies Verene being the smallest. After holding her hand and walking her in front of the other kids, she stood still enough for the pictures. Amazingly she walked herself back to us as the other kids wandered off! There must be synergy from being around other kids. The rest of the evening, she wandered around the living and dining area by herself practicing her new moves.

Verene has been doing well walking as long as one of us held her hand. It started with holding both her hands for her to balance well enough to walk straight. Whenever I'd hold just one hand, she would walk in circles. Eventually her balance came and she learned how to walk straight while holding only one of daddy's hands. A couple weeks prior she did walk a few steps by herself when we were at the zoo but that felt more like a fluke. Halloween felt more like her debut.

Thanks to generous friends at church, we enjoyed two Thanksgivings this year! My prayers to enjoy turkey on turkey day were answered in full!

Our home teacher, Tim, from church extended our first invite and we graciously accepted. Having only met him and not his wife at that time, Janae was pleasantly surprised to see an email from a sister inviting us to Thanksgiving. She accepted assuming it was Tim's wife and mentioned to me in passing that they changed the time for the meal from 6pm to 3pm. Neither of us thought much of it until I caught a glimpse of her email and noticed the last name of the email invite came from a different family! After already accepted the second invite, we felt obligated to have honor both rsvp's!

Our first dinner was held at the Gordhamers with a few other families. Small world - turns out Joseph Gordhamer knows Rich Bangerter from Romania. We may just all need to get together when the Bangerters come visit Singapore!

The first ever F1 night race was held in Singapore! In preparation for the event, many promotions were held around Singapore and I caught one of them with the FHM girls! The mock F1 car was surprisingly small. The nose of the car is made for a driver's legs and was an uncomfortably tight fit. Fortunately I had good company to consul me in my pain.

The novel idea of 200mph+ race at night seemed great to see but tickets were sold out fairly quickly with only unreasonable tickets >$2,500 a pop left when I started seriously looking into the event. A French restaurant that my co-worker frequents often comped him with a pair of complete 3 night grand stand passes - the kind with actual seats and not the cheap walk around ones. He was kind enough to part one night to me and another coworker on the team. He kept the night of the qualifying and actual race for himself and gave us official practice night tickets.

The race is LOUD! The cars are LOW. Grand stand tickets were a must because the height of the cars are lower than the cement barricades. Those with walk around tickets were left peering through breaks in the barrier. Grandstand allowed a look down onto the track. I had seats down a straight away and had cars zoom by all night.

I took the occasion to practice panning pictures of the cars as they drove by at full speed. Panning is a technique that requires moving the camera at the same speed as a moving object resulting in a picture where the object is in focus and the background is blurred. Catching a moving F1 car in my view finder was tough enough in itself. Doing so and moving my camera at the same speed as a F1 car was an even greater challenge. After playing with different shutter speeds and practicing panning, I was able to catch a couple acceptable shots. The lines in the pictures are of the chain-linked fence that had bars running vertically and horizontally. The vertical lines didn't show up due to the pan but the horizontal lines were unavoidable.

The race itself was pretty boring as all I saw were cars zoom by one after another for 2 hours straight and it was uncomfortably loud! Trying to capture good pictures of the cars made fun of an otherwise boring evening.

We're finally reunited in Singapore! Our house and both cars sold in the US without too much more difficulty. I do have to say it's a huge stress reliever to be here in Singapore and not have to worry about a home in in another country. I don't know how else to describe how good it feels to be together again but to say families are meant to be together. I'm so used to having Janae by my side in everything I do and not having that was like being apart from a good friend. Of course I missed Verene terribly but thanks to Janae's efforts I missed out on as little as possible.

No Walking for You Verene

Verene wanted to walk. It was apparent in her standing up for long periods of time by herself. Her crawling also changed from using both knees to using both feet (imagine an "A" shape baby bent over at the waist moving with two hands in front followed by her two stretched out legs). Janae quickly caught on and picked her up whenever she tried to "walk." She did this so I wouldn't miss Verene's first steps. How sweet! Of course I encouraged Janae because I didn't want to miss it either. Besides, from what we hear, walking only brings on more challenges as baby becomes more mobile. As long as she can walk by kindergarten I'd be happy. No need to start giving Verene so much pressure at this age. Plenty of that to come when she starts school. She's quickly learning how to walk however and inches along now if we hold her hands. As soon as I figure out how to post videos or take a picture of this I'll put it online. Don't be fooled, the picture below is just her standing.

Back to the US

I went back to the US to pick up Janae and Verene but had to make an unfortunate stop in LA for the funeral of an aunt who was suffering from cancer. Although quite sad and difficult times are ahead for the family, it did bring us together and strengthen family ties for those that attended in LA.

After the funeral, I took a red-eye from LA to DC and arrived with 4 days to finalize settlement requirements for the house, go to settlement, pack and move our stuff, and complete all of Putter's inspections and paperwork to transport to Singapore. Needless to say it was a sleepless couple days. The buyers put conditions for us to make certain repairs and inspections prior to the final settlement, standard fare. Janae was phenomenal in taking care of most of this while I was gone and there were just a few items needing final touches. Settlement went smooth otherwise.

Movers were courteous and nice but seemed to take much longer than expected for a small job like ours. Most of our stuff was already boxed and sorted when we prepared the house for sale. Our agent noted a 5,000 sq ft mansion packed and moved by a small team within a day. Our small almost 2,000 sq ft townhouse took two whole days!

Puppies aren't free

"Putter is a part of our family and is worth all the trouble, time and money" I kept telling myself. It was tough to suppress my old adage "puppies are free" when I realized how much it cost to get him here! Our vet / pirate charged for the same "standard" inspection each time we visited - even within the same week, and charged separately for virtually the same inspection required by Singapore. After the inspections, I had to to drive all the way to Richmond the morning of our house settlement to get a document stamped by the FDA to authorize transporting Putter out of the country. All this trouble after boarding Putter 1.5 months while selling the house.

Even more exciting was getting him on the flight. We ended up paying freight charges for both transfers and almost weren't allowed on our flight from NYC to Singapore because there were lobsters on that flight with dry ice (too cold for dogs) and more importantly, dogs aren't allowed on Singapore Airline flights out of NYC. There was a note in our booking stating we were bringing a dog and I had asked the booking agent and Singapore Airlines multiple times prior to the flight if it would be ok. All of them gave me the ok. None of this mattered to the check in staff in NYC. Policy was policy. Another passenger earlier that week in a similar situation got bumped onto another airline because of his dog. I believe it was my business class ticket that ultimately helped Putter get the exception and bump the lobsters. That'll teach the lobsters to fly economy next time.

Putter finally joined us after a month in quarantine in a far, far remote part of Singapore. The facilities there were first rate though. He had his own private kennel - newly built and painted with its own air conditioning unit. He ate well there. When we arrived to visit one weekend one of the workers said, "This one's yours? He can REALY eat!" Now the challenge is finding him dog food - $70 a bag which used to cost $10 at Costco in the US. I think Putter's going on a diet. All in, Putter's cost in moving him here has been around $3,000 USD!

Verene's still perfect

Verene's flight was much easier than Putter's. Needless to say, when we arrived in business class with a baby for a 20 hour flight, those around us were a little concerned. This was the first time we flew with Verene and we were concerned too. Fortunately Verene is a fantastic traveler. No sleep meds were required for her! She slept in a small bassinet that attached to the wall of the plane in front of us and slept there when Singapore airlines allowed her to. The problem was every time the fasten safety belt light lit up, the stewardess would come, wake her up, unbuckle her, and re-buckle her to Janae or I. We gave up after the 2nd time and just kept her in our business class seats which were big enough to keep her around. She slept best as she did when she was a newborn - on my chest. We had passengers compliment us after the entire flight telling us how wonderful she was. We were as surprised as they were! I think what they really meant was they were happy their business class ticket wasn't wasted on a flight next to a crying baby.

Business class, not cattle class

Flying Singapore Airline business class is amazing. Multiple 3-4 course meals every meal with a couple choices for each course on their menu. The menu starts with an introduction to world renowned chefs, their credentials, and the the dishes they created on the menu. Meals come on real plates with real silverware. Snack menu, basically full meals, are available at non-meal times on demand. Speaking of on-demand, 120+ movies are available on-demand! The seats fully reclined allowing us to sleep horizontally! To top it off, the stewardess were younger than my grandma, a refreshing change. They knew and called us by name and provided service like a 4 star restaurant. It'll be tough going back to cattle class.

Our beautiful house may have finally sold! We finally received a contract from an interested couple to buy our home. It's only a contract but we are hopeful as the buyers seem serious and the agent representing them experienced and solid.

Last month has been a real estate disaster for Janae and I. After we didn't sell the house by ourselves, we hired a realtor to help finish the job when I left the country. Smooth talking agents were a plenty.

All of them claimed amazing statistics and why we should use them. I now believe the low key ones with lots of experience. Get the house looking wonderful. Put great pictures online and advertisements for people to see. Wait for the buyer. There's no real magic to the process. Just the basics done well.

For the last month we used a realtor that has never taken more than 30 days to sell a house. We're either the first that took longer or we were mislead. To her defense, there were other issues with her new partner who seemed to say a lot and do very little. We gave them 30 days on the contract as they apparently didn't need more. Good thing we didn't give them any more time and were able to switch realtors!

In looking back on the experience, I should have trusted the agent less and checked up more on what they were doing. I was leaving the country and we had too much going on to have to check on them but our false sense of security was costly. While listing ourselves, we got much more traffic than they did. Why? I think they were careless about the description and pictures of the place. I never checked and Janae could never find our house online. I simply assumed their great advertising skills were well deployed. Our new realtor showed us the old listing. It only had 5 pictures and a sloppy description listing the square footage before we finished our basement! No wonder nobody wanted to come by and take a look. The place was overpriced for the size.

Our new realtors are trusted friends from our ward, Jeff and Judy Willis. We tried being objective about the decision at first and put them on fair grounds with every other agent. We went with another claiming a stronger record. The approach was fine. I think we just got tricked. As we ran out of time with Janae moving here soon, we needed somebody we could trust taking care of the place with both of us out of the country. It was decided early on that if that time ever came and the house was still on the market, we wouldn't trust anyone else but the Willis's. Janae spoke to them and they went to work.

The new house listing has yet to hit the three day mark and we've already had tremendous traffic through the house. Judy has a great artistic eye for pictures and did a fabulous job with the description. On Saturday alone, Janae had seven realtors call to see the place! Seven in one day! For the last month, I don't think we had seven. In all fairness though, we did lower the price to just below $300k. I'm confident it was a combination of price and improved listing. Unfortunately, the previous realtor didn't have either down.

We received one contract at $5,000 below our asking price and asked for closing costs over $8,000. Judy successfully negotiated for the $8,000 to be added to the price which would bring the total price above our asking! Janae and I are ecstatic and hope this will actually work out! With the buyer's realtor and the Willis's having worked well with each other over the decades both have been in the business, I'm confident things will work out.

A trial of Faith

In the housing slump, the possibility of not being able to sell the house was a concerning reality for me. This scenario ate at me when we first started the process. Janae, for some reason, always knew that we would sell the place.

We fasted and prayed for the sale of our home. During the weekend of our fast, we also went to the temple. It was there, in the Celestial room, that I was comforted to know our house would sell. It was a clear and direct answer to my prayer. I knew it would be true because that's just the way prayer works. I took comfort in this answer the last few months knowing that it would happen; I just don't know when. The when part is the hardest part.

I believe the pattern of my life over the last months had something to do with the time it took to sell the house. Had it happened quickly, I would have never learned and experienced all that I have recently.

Moving to Singapore, especially by myself, to start a new job with a new company to work in a new field has been difficult for me. I've missed my family dearly and feel the stresses of learning how financial markets work in the disparate political landscapes throughout the region. Adjusting to a new temporary home and new company has its challenges as well. Fortunately I'm feeling much better as I'm more settled.

My feeling better has also been from my study of the Old Testament of late. In particular, I've been studying the story of Joseph being sold to Egypt, separating him from his family, friends, and country to be a slave in a strange land. It's just hitting me now that there are some parallels to my life here! The difference being my slavery to the bank is voluntary and the 20 pieces of silver are mine to keep.

I love Joseph's positive attitude throughout his challenges and rising to great positions of trust wherever he was placed: Potiphar's home, the prison, and ultimately in Pharaoh's court where all of Egypt was entrusted him. His ultimate forgiveness of his brothers was touching. He comforted their guilt by saying all he went through was a blessing from God so he could save the people of Egypt and his family. Now that's a positive attitude!

Yesterday I flipped back through Genesis and read the story of Jacob struggling through the night fighting with a spirit until dawn. Jacob didn't let the spirit go until he filled Jacob's demand for a blessing. This idea stayed with me through the day causing me to ponder its meaning. It inspired me to wrestle with God for the filling of the promise given me when I was in the temple that the house would sell. I didn't feel it appropriate to demand it but rather to be firm in my asking, having the faith to know He could grant it and the hope that He would.

Janae awoke me this morning with a phone call telling me of contract on the house. Of course not all is done and there could be more roadblocks ahead prior to settlement, but that doesn't change the promise I received in the temple. It's just a matter of time.

It's really home for us now. Utah's the only place I've lived longer and though I have great friends still there, all my family has left.

All of our friends were so generous to want to and actually follow through with little parties and farewells for us. Thanks to Betty for getting all our neighbors together, Leonards, Palmers, Van Horns, Hsu, and Cheng-yu for having people gather in your homes. I truly do miss all of you!

Every time I see a little girl here in Singapore I can't help but think of Verene. I fixate my eyes on the girl and take in everything she does. I'm sure the parents have thought me some sick pedophile but I can't help missing my little girl. I think of all the stuff I get to see her do when I see her again - all the stuff I see the girls here do like holding Daddy's hand while walking, only stepping on certain color tiles through the subway, going up steps one at a time - always with the same foot forward, laughing and running around the playground, tired and falling half asleep on Daddy's shoulder, and so much more.

I miss all the little things she did before I left and all the new things I hear about ...

Always happy

She's always happy and smiling. The best is her waking up in the morning. She sits in her crib and plays by herself until one of us comes in to get her. This is especially appreciated on Saturday mornings when Verene let Janae and I sleep in. She wouldn't make a fuss until she heard us up and moving about. We would walk into her room and find her playing with some toy in the crib, she'd look at us and smile real big extending her arms out for us to pick her up. Very considerate.

Blanky

Since I've left, Janae says she started doing something else really cute in the morning. Verene will hold out her blanky to give Janae when she gets her. Cute! She wants to share. Hopefully she doesn't outgrow this by the time I see her again.

The blanky thing is new too. Before I left she wasn't attached. Now she needs it everywhere she goes and can only sleep with it by her side. I've never felt a blanket so soft as hers before. Verene appreciates it too. She chose to fall in love with this one even though we used all the blankies we received and gave each a fair chance at being the chosen one. She chose the super soft pink one. Now that she's attached, I told Janae to go and get five more just in case we misplace it. If the blanket wasn't from Saks and cost so much, we would. Fortunately we have two of them.

Peek-A-Boo

One of the cutest things I saw before leaving was her initiating peek-a-boo by herself. I was driving somewhere and Janae and Verene were both in the back seat. Verene got hold of the sun deflector, hide behind it, and popped her face out smiling and laughing. She did it over and over hiding her face and popping it out hysterically laughing.

Growing bigger!

I'm sure she has grown bigger now. She was big enough to stand up and hold onto the crib before I left. It broke my heart one morning when Janae and I heard a thump from her room. She had fallen over the edge! Everything was fine and I quickly lowered the bed a notch in the crib.

I wonder how many teeth she has now. Before I left she was at three good sized ones on bottom and two on top with a few little buds growing on top and bottom. I always thought teething would be painful and she would by fussy through it but no fuss so far!

How do I get down?

Verene just started climbing up the stairs when I left. She could get up a couple without too much trouble. Coming down was the hard part. She would get up a few stairs and want to sit down to rest. She'd try to sit while facing the steps not thinking there was no step behind her. She'd catch the side of the step she was on but would still tumble down a few and cry. Janae says she still can't get down but is much faster getting up now. Verene will climb from our main level up three stories to the loft without her even noticing.

Sweaty like Daddy

I'll have to see how she adjusts to a new home and country. Singapore is not a cool country and Verene, like me, sweats a lot! I arrive at work sweaty after taking the air conditioned subway and walking underground in the A/C underpass all the way to my office building. It's just not cold enough! I remember Verene drenched in sweat in her car seat whenever we went out in the day - even with the A/C on. Once she fell asleep with the car parked in the shade and her head was wet with sweat as if she was taking a bath. Definitely picked up my sweating genes.

Will she still remember who I am?

Hopefully she recognizes me when I see her again. Before I left, she already started recognizing people. Mom says I was the same way and wouldn't let anyone but her hold me. Verene operates with a pecking order. Strangers can hold her only if she's well rested after nap for a while. She'll decide how much time to give them before starting to cry. Daddy can come to the rescue and hold her as long as he wants so long as she doesn't see Mommy. If she sees Mommy, she'll start crying and I'll have to hand her over to Janae.

Not only does she recognize people, she recognizes home, her room, and crib. We were at dinner at Cheng-Yu's before I left. She cried when we tried putting her to sleep there as place was unfamiliar. I held her to sleep until she was really floppy, a sure sign she was out. After floppy, I put her in the pack-and-play and she awoke crying immediately. Poor Verene. She was tired but couldn't sleep in the strange place. Poor Janae and I too! On the car ride home she was half awake and was alert when we got home and I put her down in her crib. As soon as I put her down, she knew she was home and fell asleep immediately.

Hopefully she will not miss home in Ashburn too much and will adjust to home here. Hopefully she misses me too and will remember who I am.

Don't you want to buy our beautiful home?

Moving is so hard. For people that move every couple years, I certainly hope it becomes easier each time. I certainly hope it's easier the next time I move. We have a house to sell in the worst housing market the US has seen. This is definitely what's most stressful.

As soon as Janae and I knew we were going to Singapore, we immediately started preparing the home for sale. Mierelle Steed, who had just sold their home for their move to Denver, gave me a quick education on how to sell on your own as she had also done it for their move to Virginia. She came over and staged the home as hers was just profesionally done, she picked up a lot of the principles. In total, she had four pages of changes she recommended. Our new neighbor Mike, who works as a contractor, also came through and critiqued our home.

We painted the home to neutral colors, de-cluttered by selling or moving most of our belongings to Cheng-yu's basement, added a chandeleir to the dining area, changed light fixtures in two other places, changed all light bulbs to max wattage to show more light, re-chaulked everything, re-finished kitchen and bathroom cabinets, moved furniture all over the house, and much more. The principle is to make the home look like a model home with a lot of light and space creating a warm inviting environment where people can picture themselves and their stuff in the home. I do have to say, the home does look like a model home now. At least we get to enjoy it until we leave.

These touch up changes were in addition to the major renovation Janae's dad and I did at the end of last year. I took out a wall in the kitchen to open up the space which involved moving a light switch, a vent, and a telephone jack. We completely gutted the half bath, replaced the sink and vanity with a vessel sink, and replaced the toilet. Changing that one toilet required me to move or install 3 toilets. Janae thought it would be a good idea to replace the perfectly good functioning toilet in the half bath with a new white one, move the one currently in the half bath upstairs to the master bath, and throw away the toilet in the main bath.

Before Pictures (I took pics after I already made some holes in the wall. Almost forgot to take the pictures all together!)

After spending the time and money for renovations we're going to have to leave it all and sell in a down housing environment. I tried selling on my own and through the process learned that at least in this environment it's not easy. I did all we knew how to do - making the home look immaculate, the pretty pictures and flyer, listing on the realtor database and all the internet sites, catered and hosted a brokers open house. There were some people interested before I left, but no hard contracts. Janae and I left it to a realtor to finish the job.

One thing I learned about realtors through the interview process is this: I will forever more use a different realtor to buy a house, to sell a house, and to manage a rental. Each requires a different skill and there are realtors out there that specialize in one particular market only. Our selling agent only sells houses. She has a very strong personality, is assertive, and has never had a house listed for more than 30 days on the market. It is her passion and track record that made us decide to go with her.

Finally internet! I've been here already for a week and living out of a suitcase haven't had good access to internet! I'm sitting outside some condo building and just finished skyping with Janae and Verene. I miss them too much! Hopefully I can keep coming back or finding another good spot to blog and surf. Below is what I wrote on the plane over...

I've left home for good - at least for the foreseable future. I'm sitting in business class on the way to San Francisco to visit Dad and Michelle prior to moving to Singapore. Preparing for the move has kept my emotions occupied that it has not really hit me all the people I'm leaving behind.

I already miss Verene dearly and it has only been a couple hours. It's not the time apart but rather the fact that I'm not going to see her for another six weeks or so. The same goes for Janae. This will be the longest I have been apart from both of them. Verene in the short 10 months she's been a part of our lives has me wrapped around her finger. I find it hard to believe my feelings for her run as deep as they do. It's the look she gives me when I walk away. Her eyes make me feel like I'm deserting her and her world will fall apart because I'm leaving her side, they tear up as she starts with her crying, and both arms extend toward me for me to pick her up. I just melt.

Everything leading up to me leaving for Singapore happened so very quickly...

It was the beginning of May when Pam, a recruiter, called me with an opportunity in Singapore to do Fixed Income strategy for Asia. She had much more confidence in me than I have in myself as I know nothing about the markets there. I'm sleeping when those markets are open. I know US fixed income and even then all I know are mortgages as I've only worked at Freddie Mac since graduating from school. She pitched the idea to Barclays Capital with full disclosure: I don't know the job now but have the knowledge, experience and skills to be able to do a good job in due time. I was able to convince them of the same story after phone interviews and video conferences.

The most intense of them occured on a Monday night when I left the office in the afternoon to catch a flight to New York. I started at 7pm with two interviews with Latin American economists based in New York. After their interviews, the conference with Singapore started. Around midnight, the interviews stopped, I got dinner at Serafina's, and caught a 6 am flight back to DC. Besides leaving early that day, nobody at Freddie would have known. I had such a great time speaking with and meeting everyone I met. The interviews all went well from my immediate boss, the head of research for Asia, to his boss, the head of global emerging market research. It was less than month from the first interview to being offered the job.

My new job is essentially deriving fixed income investment strategies for Asian currencies. Bonds, swaps, futures and options for China, S. Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The region covered here includes all of South East Asia from Vietnam all the way to India. One of the traders I interviewed with is playing with Pakistani bonds! The job will require knowledge of each of the countries respective economies and central bank policies - all of which I know nothing about at the present.

In relfecting on how smoothly and quickly the process occurred, I can't help but think of how blessed I am. For me to pick up a job of this caliber at a time when the US economy, especially mortgages in fixed income, are falling apart and Asia is picking up. Within a week after I left, Freddie tanked again to as low as $3 a share! Yes, me leaving the company detrimental to the stock! Just kidding. It probably would have held in longer if I left earlier - it must have been the bad work I did after I knew I was going to leave and didn't care!

To my knowledge, nobody has left Freddie Mac to do anything internationally related beacuse it's such an unnatrual transition. People have left for other fixed income jobs in the US and even equities but nothing overseas. Although I don't fully know the reason why I'm heading to Singapore yet, it really became clear to me when Aaron Mahler, our home teacher, was over one day and upon leaving prayed for us to know the purpose of our moving there. It was nothing profound but it really hit me.

In general Verene is a very happy baby. I'm sure her sleep habits have a bit to do with her being so happy. She goes to sleep at 7pm and doesn't wake until 6 or 7 for a feeding after which she goes back to sleep until 8 or 9 am. The best part of her sleep is she respects the morning. When Janae awakes, she usually finds Verene awake playing by herself in the crib making no noise! She does the same for me on Saturday when I sleep in! She knows to keep quiet until we get out of bed to get her.

Verene was besides herself the first time she rolled over on her own at about 4 months. She was on her back ready to take a nap and accidentally rolled over landing her face in her hands. Not knowing what happened she started to cry but quickly stopped as she fell asleep. When Janae rolled her over after her nap, Verene's face was marked with her hands.

"She's just looking at her hands" was the answer I got when I asked what Verene was doing one afternoon. I couldn't help but smile at the cute innocent gesture. Verene discovered her hands at about 3 months of age. It started as Janae said, simply holding them out and looking at them occasionally moving them about.

Being new to hand movements, it took little Verene a while before getting a handle on how to control them. The first thing she wanted to do was put them in her mouth, however, her lack of coordination made for quite the show at first. She would start with her hands in the air above her while laying on her back. Slowly she would move her hands closer to her face and hit herself in the cheek or other part of her face as she missed her mouth. On good attempts, she would miss her face completely.

Determination is the lesson learned as Verene eventually mastered the hand-in-mouth. Her favorite move became the combo - one hand in mouth the other extended to look at. - until she decided eating both hands was best. She's still on the eating both hands stage.
